Ask about condition
Turn a listing and its photographs into clear questions about the specific work.
Start with the supplied statement
Read the listing’s condition description and note anything it does not address. A short statement or an empty field is not proof that a work is free of damage or restoration. Keep the statement with the listing reference so the response concerns the same example.
Ask for the views you need
Request current photographs of the full work, edges, reverse, signature and frame where relevant. Ask about marks, fading, creases, surface changes, repairs and previous restoration, without assuming that a photograph establishes their presence or absence. Ask which parts were inspected and whether any areas are concealed by framing.
Confirm before proceeding
Ask for a written condition report tied to the exact work and clarification of any documents offered with it. Photographs and this guide do not authenticate an artwork or replace an independent specialist’s assessment. Confirm packing, delivery and the transaction’s return terms separately.
